HOUSE TIPS

KEEPING YOU CONNECTED

• Our 5g wifi is Guest4-5, password is Lakeside

• Log into your favorite streaming sites on the SmartTV on the lower level and remember to log out before you leave for the next guest.

IN THE KITCHEN

• Our household water comes from a new 600 ft well (that’s almost as high as the Pru for you Boston folks), is monitored for water quality to ensure it is safe to drink, and we think mighty tasty.

• Faucet operates by touch when handle is extended. Light in base indicates water temperature.

• Please use one of the cork trivets or wood coasters when placing anything hot on the dining table. We learned the hard way that it scorches with excessive heat.

• Be careful to catch all foodscraps in the sink drain and deposit in the trash. Our septic system does not allow for food scraps to be washed down the drain.

• Induction stovetop works with any pan or pot that accepts magnets, including all pans provided with your rental.  To get started, place pan or pot on one of the four cooking elements, press “Power” followed by “On” by the cooking element you are using. Then, slide your finger across the graduated dotted lines in the control panel to select a cooking temperature from 1 to 9/P (for “power boil”). To turn off, press “off” for the cooking element you were using which will then cool down over the next few minutes. Please only use the provided cooktop cleanser &/or glass cleaner (stored under the sink) to clean the cooktop to ensure the glass does not get scratched.

• Please extend the sliding shelf beyond the pantry when using the toaster oven to reduce risk of damage to the pantry.

• We’ve left a few essentials in the cabinets and refrigerator for your use.  Please help yourself to whatever you find.  Goodness knows there are too many half-used ketchup bottles in the world!

Keeping you comfortable

• This is a passive house so our HVAC systems may work a little differently from your home.

• Our air conditioning and heating systems should be very responsive to the remotes provided on each of the three floors.  The fastest way to cool down (or warm up) the house is to leave all interior doors open so that air can flow freely between rooms until your desired temperature is reached.  

• Fresh air is continually circulated through every room in the house resulting in a complete exchange of all air in the house every three hours.  Instead of bathroom fans, a "booster" system works to bring fresh air more directly into the bathrooms, if needed.  Simply press the toggle switch above the lighting controls for each bathroom to enable the booster system.  You will not hear a fan noise as you would in a conventional home but we promise it is working! 

The Great Outdoors

• There are no screens for the sliding or front doors so we recommend closing in advance of dusk for insect control in the house.  If insects find their way inside, there is a hand vacuum in the bottom of the kitchen pantry and a canister vacuum in the upstairs hall closet that are handy for catching insects that alight on walls and ceilings.

• Our motion detector lights are quite sensitive so please do not be alarmed if they come on unexpectedly.  In our experience, squirrels, rabbits, and birds are our most likely visitors. 

• While we have never seen any, we try not to tempt bears from making an appearance on our grounds by keeping all food inside overnight and stowing all trash in the shed. 

• Lake Waukewan is the town of Meredith's drinking supply and carefully monitored for water quality.  Please refrain from using any soap in the water. If you rent or bring a boat from another lake, please carefully examine the bottom of the boat to ensure it is clean before launching into Lake Waukewan.

• There is a pair of nesting bald eagles on Chapman Island (the island closest to our home with a tiny house on it).  Have a canoe or kayak over to have a look.  There are also plenty of loons and a neighborly great horned owl nearby to enjoy.

• If you hit a stretch of rainy weather, the Meredith Community Center has free indoor basketball courts, a climbing wall, and a game room. The Meredith Public Library runs great programs for kids. Funspot, the Meredith Cinema, and the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro are also good rainy day options for kids of all ages..

At the waterfront, for your use

• Two kayaks, two SUPs, a canoe, paddles, and a swim raft. Please pull all watercraft on to shore after use and store properly on the boat rack. Please bring your own lifejackets, if needed by members of your party as we cannot provide them.

• A fabric hammock and dining cushions are stored in the deck box at the waterfront.  Please put it away dry in the evenings to ensure it is protected from dew and moisture.

• A large floating chaise in the deck box at the waterfront.

• Four solar lanterns are in the deck box at the waterfront.  Leave them in the sun for a couple of hours for use later in the evening.

• A cooler, please tip upside down to drain with the lid off for our next guests.

• Firewood, kindling, and matches (in a ziploc in the deck box) for use in the firepit. Kiln-dried firewood can also be purchased in town at the hardware store. Please extinguish your fire completely before turning in for the night.

BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR

• All cars must be parked in our driveway and not along the road. Please never park, even briefly, in our neighbor’s driveway that begins in the front of the house at 77 Winona Shores Road or in front of our other neighbor’s extra space cordoned off with a red chain.

• Please respect neighborhood quiet hours of 10pm to 8am.

On foot or by boat

• The railroad tracks make a lovely walking path.  Facing the lake, head to the left (northwest) to reach neighboring Lake Winona and to the right to head right into the town of Meredith.

• If you're up for an adventure, canoe to Swasey Park on the southeast end of the lake and walk right into town from the park.

Deck

• Deck lighting will come on automatically a half hour after sunset until 10pm every night. Please contact us if you would like these times adjusted.

• The sofas in the screen porch can be fitted with twin sheets for a sublime outdoor sleeping experience.

• The deck makes a great spot for morning yoga. You’ll find two yoga mats for your use in the lower level closet. Or take your yoga practice to our floating swim raft for a real balance challenge.

• There is an exterior camera in the doorbell which we will not be monitoring during your visit, but feel obliged to let you know it’s there.

Trash

• Trash will be collected by a service every Saturday. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a trash service that will collect recyclables so all trash is single stream and should be placed in the bins provided. Please keep the shed fastened close at all times.
